Sigma 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM
Since the beginning of 2020 we have added the Sigma 60-600 Sports to our range. Our first question was: Why does Sigma releases this lens when they already have these magnificent 150-600 mm Contemporary and 150-600 mm Sports lenses. Using these lenses we have already a perfect fit to go on safari! Once we had received the lens we started to work with it. Unboxing this lens tells you immediately it is a Sports lens: not a light weight! It’s more compact than the 150-600 Sports one. So let’s find out if that lens can give us some nice pictures with that extra 90 mm…….
This is how Sigma describes the lens: “Covering from 60mm to 600mm, the 10× hyper-telephoto zoom lens achieves the same level of high image quality as the SIGMA 150–600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Sports. With the lens construction of 25 elements in 19 groups, consistent image quality can be created throughout the entire zoom range. This lens also incorporates Intelligent OS*1 adopting the latest algorithm to deliver an image stabilization effect of 4 stops*2. The high-speed AF, thanks to the HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) with an updated algorithm, captures instantaneous photography movement. High ratio, high image quality, and high mobility ―The SIGMA 60–600mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Sports marks the birth of a lens that is on another level from existing high ratio zoom lenses. “
Click onto the Canon 5D MIV and we are off to shoot some pictures. Works like the 150-600 mm and all buttons on the lens are also in place. So here we do not have to learn new settings. First impression: the lens is fast and quite! Love it. The lens is also a little shorter than the 150-600 mm Sports; also nice when you are sitting in a game vehicle or in a hide. Zooming is done by turning the zoom ring to the left: same direction as a Canon lens. Makes it easy! And yes, I am using that extra 90 mm: when an animal is walking close to the vehicle, I can still work with the same set-up!
Result: Magnificent! The pictures are nice and crisp and the focus is were I want to have it. When light is getting low, this lens still performs. Ok it’s not the fast Canon 500 mm f/4 with the nice L-series bookeh but the Sigma 60-600 mm gives me such beautiful sharp pictures with its specific bookeh that I am really amazed with the result!
So which lens to choose now? 150-600 mm or 60-600 mm? The Sigma 60-600 mm comes only in Sports edition for now. If you need that extra 90 mm and wants to work with a 10x zoom lens, this is the one for you. You are on a budget and photography is a hobby? Do not hesitate: choose Sigma 150 – 600 mm Contemporary: light lens what will give you beautiful pictures. Need a faster lens and you do not mind the weight: Sigma 150-600 mm Sports. This lens has proven itself already.
